The British national press is one of the world's oldest and most fiercely competitive, divided into broadsheet quality papers and high-circulation tabloids. The Times (founded 1785) and The Daily Telegraph (1855) anchor the centre-right broadsheet market, both owned by News UK and DMGT respectively, while The Guardian (1821) — owned by the Scott Trust via Guardian Media Group — leads centre-left coverage alongside The Independent. Reach plc publishes the popular tabloid Daily Mirror, while DMGT's Daily Mail (1896) holds one of the largest paid circulations. The Sun, owned by News UK (Murdoch), dominates the populist tabloid space. Strong regional and national presses operate across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
